Derby Day

Nearly 120,000 Mint Juleps are served every year at the Kentucky Derby. Back in 1938, you could buy a julep for 75 cents. Today, you can buy one that costs $1,000. The mint is imported from Ireland, the ice from the Bavarian Alps, the sugar from Australia, and it’s served in a silver plated cup designed by Tiffany jewelers. Want the gold plated cup? That’ll be $2,500. The revenue from these drinks is collected to support retired racehorses, fund academic scholarships, and other charitable causes.
