Behind the backbar

Happy Sunday, and welcome behind the backbar, where we end the week with a quote regarding wine and spirits. Some quotes and authors are better known than others, but all shed light on the attitudes this liquid inspires.

“Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk. That’ll teach you to keep your mouth shut.”

Ernest Hemingway

Taken by Lloyd Arnold in 1939

Ernest Hemingway was an American novelist, short-story writer and journalist. In addition to having a profound impact on American literature, he’s also credited with a number of booze related quotes and some…unconventional, cocktails (Death in the Afternoon, for example).

This quote, which I’ve recited many times, actually isn’t found directly in any of Hemingway’s writings. Charles Scribner Jr., who took over publishing for Hemingway when he was only 30, shared this quote and attributed it to the author, writing that it was something Hemingway had shared with him on more than one occasion.
