Joseph Prisestley is one of the most accomplished chemists of the 1700s. He’s credited with the discovery of oxygen, carbon monoxide, and other gases. He also wrote considerably on electricity and in 1766 was made a Fellow of the Royal Society for his accomplishments.
He’s also the inventor of carbonated water, which was a bit of a happy accident in 1767. He was able to create carbon dioxide by mixing sulfuric acid and chalk, and then added his newly created gasses to still water. Prisestley's invention went on to create what is currently over a $3 billion a year industry.
